Kids will love ‘Max and Ruby’

Do you remember when you were little and sometimes you’d want to put on a show for your family, with costumes and music and maybe even a stage?

That’s what 7-year-old Ruby wants to do. She wants to put on a show for her grandma, who she loves so much. And she wants it to be just right, with a princess, a castle and music.

It would all be so great, if not for her little brother Max.

Village Theatre Pied Piper presents a musical for kids, “Max and Ruby,” about sibling rivalry between these two bunnies.

Max is the kind of little brother who wants to do his own thing, make lots of noise and generally get in the way more than help. This sends Ruby to recruit others for her project, such as her Bunny Scout friends. But will she finish her show before curtain time?

“Max and Ruby” is produced by the New York-based Theatreworks USA group. The production is based on the Nickelodeon television show, which was inspired by the series of children’s books by Rosemary Wells.

It’s fast-paced for the 3- to 10-year-old crowd and includes a diversity of musical numbers, such as a hoedown tune about Cowboy Max and a Broadway-style number involving a huge blue tarantula — who is more cute than scary.

“Kids grow up so quickly and there is so much pushed upon them,” Erica Weir, Pied Piper manager, was quoted as saying in a press release. “Presenting a delightful family show like ‘Max and Ruby’… is an entertaining crowd pleaser and still retains childhood innocence.”

“Max and Ruby” will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday at Everett Civic Auditorium, 2415 Colby Ave., Everett.

Tickets are $12 to $14. Call 425-257-8600 or go to www.villagetheatre.org. Performances for school groups are 10 a.m. and noon Monday at Everett Civic Auditorium.
