If you’re the parent of a preteen girl, you already know about “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl,” the first feature film based on Mattel’s popular line of American Girl dolls. The movie, which opened Wednesday, is a sugary drama but not without grit.
The heroine is 9-year-old Kit (Abigail Breslin, right), an aspiring reporter. Her story begins in 1934, as the Great Depression rocks her middle-class Cincinnati neighborhood. Dad Chris O’Donnell leaves town to find work and Mom Julia Ormond takes in boarders, including wacky librarian Joan Cusack and traveling magician Stanley Tucci.
American Girl dolls “live” during pivotal eras in history, but Kit’s milieu couldn’t be more timely: At times, the movie feels ripped from today’s headlines.
With realism and intelligence, “Kit Kittredge” becomes a kiddie film, rated G, that’s worth an adult ticket, too. It’s showing at Alderwood Mall, Everett, Marysville, Stanwood, Metro, Pacific Place, Woodinville and Cascade Mall. — Newsday
