We hold these truths to be self-evident. Do you?

What three presidents died on the Fourth of July?

John Adams, the second president, and Thomas Jefferson, the third president, both died in 1826. Jefferson died first. James Monroe, the fifth president, died in 1831.

What president was born on the Fourth of July?

John Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president, was born in 1872, in Plymouth Notch, Vermont.

What first daughter was born on July 4?

Malia Obama, Barack and Michelle Obama’s oldest daughter, turns 12 today.

What day did the United States declare its independence from Great Britain?

Trick question. The Continental Congress declared its independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776. But the Declaration of Independence, the official document, was approved July 4, 1776. Benjamin Franklin predicted that the new country would celebrate its birth on July 2, but that date was eclipsed.

Who designed the first flag?

Well, it probably wasn’t Betsy Ross. Historians think it was actually Francis Hopkinson, not to be confused with Francis Scott Key, who wrote our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Hopkinson was an attorney and delegate to the Continental Congress.

How many men signed the Declaration of Independence?

Fifty-six. There is some dispute about when signing was completed — it may have been as late of August 1776. All signers were delegates to the Continental Congress from the 13 original colonies.

Did George Washington chop down a cherry tree on July 4?

C’mon! How would we know?
