What: A short climb up to a lake at the foot of Mount Pilchuck.
Where: Take the Mountain Loop Highway 2 miles past Verlot to the parking lot on the right.
Length: 5.4 miles round trip.
Difficulty: Moderate. There are still patches of snow and ice.
Beginning elevation: 1,000 feet.
Permit: Northwest Forest Pass.
Notes: Although there is still some snow and ice on the Lake Twenty-two trail, you shouldn’t be too picky: By the time the trail is clear, it will also be packed every weekend through September. The trail follows Twenty-two Creek most of the way to the lake, crossing the stream near the beginning and then moving through forest and open, rocky slopes. Once you get to the lake, you can look up at Mount Pilchuck, or down at its reflection in the calm water.
