Lands of sand featured in this week’s TV films

We travel to the desert in this week’s movies on TV, and find it to be very clean.

Today

“Reservoir Dogs,” 8 p.m., Bravo. This debut film for Quentin Tarantino garnered the former video-store clerk a good deal of attention – most of it justified. Harvey Keitel leads the tough cast. 1992.

Saturday

“Lawrence of Arabia,” 7:30 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. David Lean’s epic story of an Englishman (Peter O’Toole) who goes native in the sands of the Middle East. Completely absorbing throughout its very long running time, with a star-making turn by O’Toole. 1962.

“Shallow Hal,” 8 p.m., FX. Sweet-natured Farrelly brothers fable about a chauvinist (Jack Black) who suddenly sees an overweight woman (Gwyneth Paltrow) as svelte. 2001.

Sunday

“Laura,” 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m., Fox Movies. One of cinema’s greatest mystery films, as a detective (Dana Andrews) finds himself falling for a murdered girl. With Gene Tierney. 1944.

“Morocco,” 7:30 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. The high cheekbones of Marlene Dietrich meet the high style of director Josef von Sternberg, in one of the best of their hothouse collaborations. The setting is a foreign legion outpost in North Africa. 1930.

Monday

“Dazed and Confused,” 8 p.m., Oxygen. Director Richard Linklater (“Before Sunset”) crafted this unsentimental look back at high school, circa 1976. Lots of future stars in the cast. 1993.

Tuesday

“Edward Scissorhands,” 9:45 p.m., Encore. This winsome Tim Burton fantasy was an early indicator that Johnny Depp was an enormously inventive young actor. Vincent Price appears in the early scenes. 1990.

Wednesday

“Assassination Tango,” 9 p.m., Sundance. A weird outing for director-star Robert Duvall, who plays a hit man intoxicated by tango dancing in Argentina. It doesn’t really hold together, but there’s some good dancing in it. 2002.

Thursday

“Escape From Alcatraz,” 5:45 p.m., American Movie Classics. Clint Eastwood plays an inmate, determined to bust out of the island prison. Don’t bet against it. 1979.
