“The Comedy of Errors,” one of Shakespeare’s most farcical plays, is presented by the Seattle Shakespeare Company starting with a low-priced preview Thursday and running through Jan. 28.
The time of the play has been reset to a seaport of the early 19th century. There are two sets of identical twins, who don’t know the others exist. This creates a mistaken identity calamity in a town filled with pirates, wanton women, shady dealings and newfound independence, according to the Seattle Shakespeare Company Web site.
“This very farcical play has some dark undertones and two very human themes of yearning for family and the completion of self by finding what has been lost,” Seattle Shakespeare Company artistic director Stephanie Shine said in a written statement. “The extreme situations are highly amusing and yet, for these characters, there exists great peril. We are held, deliciously, at the precipice of disaster, and the laughter is balm for the soul.”
