In the days leading up to most schools’ winter vacations, local libraries will open their doors to those seeking some holiday fun. After all, libraries are more than just places to read books or do research.
The following is a summary of the library branches offering family-friendly activities to celebrate winter in the next week:
Winter Extravaganza, featuring the The Harmonica Pocket Children’s Show in Mill Creek: 11 a.m. Saturday, 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway, 425-337-4822.
The playfully educational performance band, known for its swinging acoustic story-songs, dance and movement games will come to Mill Creek to encourage families to get moving and enjoy the season. The library staff says all ages will enjoy the show. The Web site www.harmonicapocket.com/kids/index.html offers details on the group.
Winter Celebration in Lynnwood: 2:30 p.m. Saturday, 19200 44th Ave. W., 425-778-2148.
Nothing chases away winter’s cold like a free afternoon of prizes and high-energy games such as Dance Dance Revolution.
The staff says the event, which will probably last about two hours, is intended for teens. Pizza will be served.
Craft mania in Snohomish: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 311 Maple Ave.; 360-568-2898.
Families can find an outlet for their creativity in Snohomish, with two fun-filled afternoons of making free holiday crafts. Staff members say the event will last as long as people keep showing up, or until the 9 p.m. closing time.
The projects are varied, including paper, sequins and foam, and characters including polar bears, penguins, snowflakes and more. This is the first year of the event, which was prompted by the suggestions of parents and caregivers who attended story and play times with their children. All ages are welcome at the craft event, but the staff says children in first through third or fourth grade likely would benefit more than younger children, although younger kids could participate with parental assistance.
Winter party at Edmonds: 4 p.m. Tuesday, 650 Main St., 425-771-1933.
Students are invited to drop in after school for free activities, including Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, karaoke and board games. Food will be provided. Staff members say the event is best suited to children ages 12 and older.
