We asked readers to tell us what they love about their moms. Kids from 17 to well over 70 entered The Herald’s Mother’s Day contest. The winner received a $100 gift card to Renee’s Contemporary Clothing in Everett. But there were many other heartfelt stories. You can find all of them here.
Son: Robert F. Smith, Lake Stevens
Mom: Mary Smith
Mom died in 2007, but one of the most touching memories I cherish from my childhood is when, after being punished by dad and sent to bed without supper, mom came to console me through my tears and heavy sobbing. She didn’t say very much, but she brought me a small plate of food and snuggled with me until I calmed down enough to go to sleep. I think I was 7 or 8 at the time – and that was over 50 years ago – but her gentle loving actions back then still comfort me to this day. Even right now, my eyes are welling up with the warmth of gratitude.
I just wanted to honor the memory of my mom and all parents who bless their homes with love, wisdom, patience, encouragement, comfort, peace and many heart-felt embraces. It’s a task not fully appreciated or understood by younger generations until they begin to fill their parents’ shoes.
