Marysville Strawberry Fest returns for 82nd year

Has it been 82 years already?

It has for the Marysville Strawberry Festival, which is in full swing this weekend with Kids’ Party in the Park, the Berry Run, the Kiddie’s Parade and the ever popular Strawberry Shortcake eating contest.

The festival also offers the Market in the Park, a carnival, a grand parade and a finale of fireworks.

The festival goes through Sunday with activities at various sites including the Marysville Middle School, 4923 67th St. NE; and Asbery Field, Sixth Street and Alder Avenue.

The schedule highlights:

  • The carnival through Sunday at Marysville Middle School.
  • Market in the Park, 2 to 9 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday; Asbery Field.
  • The Kiddie parade 6 p.m., grand parade 7:45 p.m., Saturday; grand parade starts at 76th and State, proceeds south to Third Street, then east to Alder Street.
  • The fireworks, about 10 p.m. Saturday with viewing from State Avenue.
  • The Shortcake Eating Contest kicks off at noon Saturday with the 5 to 7 year olds competing at 1 p.m. at Asberry Field. The contest is broken up into various age groups from 5 to adults.

There is live entertainment throughout the festival including appearances by Clover the Balloon Fairy. She makes spontaneous balloon creations and gives fairy gifts away to new friends, but remember: fairies don’t speak in words.

Other entertainment includes the Seattle-based folk grass group Lavender Lucy; the group Magazine, which plays classic and current rock; pianist Jed Skenandore; and Voices of the Village Performance Ensemble, musicians and performers with developmental disabilities who encourage the audience to participate by using drums, shakers and tambourines supplied by the band.

Festival admission is free but activity costs vary.

More strawberries: The Biringer Strawberry Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 21412 59th Ave. NE, Arlington.

The festival has trolley rides to the U-pick strawberry fields, animals to see, an inflatable children’s slide and pony rides on Saturday.

There will also be kite-flying, face painting, a giant strawberry and castle maze inflatables, pennies in the hay, kiddy slides, interactive strawberry storytime.

You can picnic on the covered wagon next to the old historic barn or buy fresh strawberry shortcake, kettle corn and other goodies.
