What: A 105-acre combination of woods, beaches, footbridges and picnic shelters
Where: 6026 156th St. SW, Edmonds
Why: Walkers need a bit of elevation gain, too, and this is one of the best places in the south county area for a little heavy breathing. There is disabled access and a wheelchair-accessible loop at the lower end. However, the east parking lot leads to a 1.25-mile moderately steep trail that descends through big-leaf maples, alders, evergreens, cottonwoods and even some old-growth stumps. Much of the trail runs along Lund’s Gulch Creek, named after the Norwegian immigrant who built near the beach in 1878. Beach access is through a tunnel under the railroad tracks.
