‘Minnesota Man,’ ‘Seafarer open on local stages

“Minnesota Man”: This story by John Olive revolves around two high school buddies, Alan and Larry, who are sitting in the moonlit yard of an abandoned farmhouse in southern Minnesota, drinking beer, laughing, sharing stories and saying goodbye.

It’s a bittersweet goodbye for the friends because Alan leaves the next day for college. It’s 1968 and Vietnam looms.

This is a Driftwood Players alternative stages production that opens Sunday and runs Sundays and Mondays through March 2 in Edmonds.

The alternative shows are limited engagements, followed by a dessert buffet.

If you go: Opens at 7 p.m. Sunday and runs at 7 p.m. Sundays and 8 p.m. Mondays through March 2 at The Driftwood Players Wade James Theatre, 950 Main St., Edmonds. Tickets are $10 for the show and dessert buffet following the performance; 425-774-9600, www.driftwoodplayers.com.

“The Seafarer”: Myths are as much a part of Ireland as the whiskey, and this dark comedy contains a helping of both.

“The Seafarer” opens with previews Thursday and runs through March 28 at Seattle Repertory Theatre. This is a recent Broadway hit by Conor McPherson that’s set in a time-forgotten corner of northern Dublin.

Four old friends gather as always for the holidays in their time-honored tradition: a bottle of whiskey and a deck of cards among them. A mysterious stranger arrives and wants a piece of the action. The friends find themselves playing a game with devilishly high stakes in a story that is mythical, darkly funny and surprisingly uplifting. It’s directed by Wilson Milam.

“The Seafarer” solidified a place for Irish playwright McPherson, 37, among the finest of his generation, according to the New York Times. The Wall Street Journal dubbed the show the best new play of the year.

If you go: Opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Seattle Repertoire Theatre, 155 Mercer St., Seattle. Shows are 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sundays through March 28. There will be a special St. Patrick’s Day performance March 17 with an after-show party; $15 to $59; 206-443-2222, 877-900-9285, www.seattlerep.org.
