Miss Manners doesn’t make many public appearances anymore, but she’s making an exception for the Seattle Men’s Chorus.
Judith Martin is the guest star in the chorus’s Saturday and Sunday spring concerts in Seattle, “Minding Our Manners.”
She’s made a career out of interpreting culture and civility. After attending Wellesley College, Martin worked for the Washington Post as a reporter and film and theater critic before founding the Style section.
Her etiquette column appears in more than 200 newspapers; she’s also written about a dozen books on manners-related topics.
Martin will read from some of her letters while the chorus provides familiar and original songs about etiquette and social situations fraught with pratfalls.
Melissa Ferrick: Emotional or playful, powerful or vulnerable, it’s all part of the package with vocalist and guitarist Ferrick, who will perform Thursday in Seattle. A Boston Globe critic wrote, “She appeared at times to be channeling Bruce Springsteen and Rickie Lee Jones simultaneously.” Garrison Starr also will perform.
The Subdudes: This is one reunion that works. The stellar roots-rock group reunited in 2003 and, with any luck, will stay together until the musicians hang up their instruments. The Subdudes perform Sunday in Seattle, bringing original music from “Miracle Mule.” While the foundation is still Southern rock, R&B, gospel and blues, the musicians are emphasizing gospel and the band’s New Orleans’ roots.
Joe Diffie: The Grammy-winning country singer has turned out 17 top-10 hits, including “If the Devil Danced in Empty Pockets,” “Bigger than the Beatles,” and “Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox (If I Die).” Diffie sings Sunday in Skagit County. He’s a member of the Grand Ole Opry and has his compositions sung by Conway Twitty, Tracy Lawrence and Tim McGraw.
David Jacob-Strain: The solo acoustic country-blues guitarist is bringing his band on this road trip, stopping in Seattle on Tuesday. Think of it as an acoustic blues jam band that stays true to the songs of his latest CD, “Ocean or a Teardrop.”
Clark Terry: For more than 60 years, the jazz trumpeter has entertained and collected accolades and performed for seven U.S. presidents and in 50 jazz festivals on seven continents, composed more than 200 songs, written books, and performed with jazz stars. He’ll perform Tuesday through April 10 in Seattle.
