Movie reviews

“Brokeback Mountain” HHHH Two cowboys come together in the summer of 1963, and can’t quite get over their mutual passion as their lives continue. Much more than its “gay cowboy” label, Ang Lee’s film is a superb Western, well acted by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. (R, for language, violence, nudity.)

“Cach” HHHH Tantalizing mystery about a complacent French couple (Daniel Auteuil and Juliette Binoche) who receive troubling videotapes at their home. Director Michael Haneke forces the audience to find the answers to the mystery, but in the meantime cracks apart his characters’ lives and reveals past guilt. (In French, English subtitles.) (R, for violence.)

“Capote” HHHH An elegant account of Truman Capote’s experiences researching and writing the “non-fiction novel” “In Cold Blood.” The movie’s moral dilemma is a bit too neat, but Philip Seymour Hoffman captures the fey writer. (R, for language, violence.)

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” HH The first book of C.S. Lewis’s beloved children’s series gets the Disney treatment, with mixed results. There’s real magic in the introduction of a magical world, but a tame approach and too many computer-animated characters fizzle things out. (PG, for violence.)

“Glory Road” HH A great true sports story gets the plastic Jerry Bruckheimer treatment. This one’s about the 1966 Texas Christian basketball team, the first squad to start five black players in the NCAA finals. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Good Night, and Good Luck.” HHH George Clooney directed this black-and-white look at the showdown between newsman Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) and Senator Joseph McCarthy in 1953-54. The story is strong even if the approach is just a bit self-satisfied.(PG, for subject matter.)

“Hoodwinked” HH A “Rashomon” take on the little red riding hood story, with the particulars of the case treated as clues in a police procedural. Funny for a while, and the computer animation is cool, but it has a sour aftertaste. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Imagine Me &You” HH “Four Weddings”-style Brit comedy with a bride (Piper Perabo) falling for the florist (Lena Headey) at her wedding. Scattered laughs delivered by deft performers-notably Matthew Goode, who’s ready to inherit Hugh Grant’s charm mantle-can’t make this memorable. (R, for subject matter.)

“The Last Holiday” HHH Queen Latifah as a frumpy New Orleans sales clerk who goes on a European spree after she receives a terminal diagnosis. An irresistible vehicle for Latifah, under director Wayne Wang’s refreshingly soft touch.(PG-13, for language.)

“The Matador” HH A bad-mannered professional hit man (Pierce Brosnan) forms an awkward partnership with a suburban businessman (Greg Kinnear) while on a job. Some of the jokes land and Brosnan is seedy fun, so it’s a drag to admit this movie isn’t as terrific as it should be. (R, for language, violence, subject matter.)

“Match Point” HHHH A serious one from Woody Allen about a tennis pro (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) in London who finds himself groomed to join an upper-class family…except for one little uncontrollable urge toward a sexy actress (Scarlet Johansson). The sinister tone is surprisingly well maintained. (R, for language, subject.)

“Mrs. Henderson Presents” HHH An account of the Windmill Theater, a revue house that added nudity to its format in the 1930s and kept open throughout the wartime Blitz. Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins are in familiar roles, although Stephen Frears’ film is a little vague about its purpose. (R, for nudity, subject matter.)

“Munich ” HHHH Steven Spielberg looks at the secret Israeli squad that targeted Palestinian terrorists in retribution for the massacre of Israel’s 1972 Olympic team. Superb as a spy movie, the film also grapples with the moral price of assassination. Eric Bana stars. (R, for violence, nudity, language.)

“Nanny McPhee” HHH Lively family film about a grotesque-looking but magical nanny (Emma Thompson) who tends seven holy terrors for a harried widower (Colin Firth). The high spirits have a distinctly British sense of humor, not the smiley-face kiddie fare of too many Hollywood films. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Rumor Has It…” HH The amusing opening reels suggest that director Rob Reiner is back in his “When Harry Met Sally…” mode, as Jennifer Aniston suspects her parents might have been involved in the real-life story of “The Graduate.” The movie flubs the premise halfway through and never recovers. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Something New” HH A black urban professional (Sanaa Lathan) finds herself reluctantly falling for a white guy (Simon Baker) and dealing with the fallout from friends and family. A fairly sleepy romantic comedy, complete with perfect male fantasy figure. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“The Squid and the Whale” HHHH A family falls apart in Brooklyn in 1986, an event seen through the eyes of the two sons, age 16 and 12. The observations are dead-on and the acting is terrific in this funny indie film. Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney lead the cast. (R, for language, subject matter.)

“Syriana” HH An ambitious take on the connections between the global oil industry and governments around the world-told through a complicated (and confusing) group of settings. George Clooney and Matt Damon are among the many characters in Stephen Gaghan’s film. (R, for violence and language.)

“The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada” HHHH A wonderful and complex Western directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones. Both traditional and modern, the film tells of cowboy Jones taking the corpse of a friend down to Mexico. (R, for violence, language, subject matter.)

“Tristan &Isolde” HH A classic Dark Ages love story is brought to life, with James Franco on the side of a British tribe and Sophia Myles the daughter of the Irish king. Their star-crossed love makes for a humorless but passable entertainment, produced by Ridley Scott. (PG-13, for violence.)

“Why We Fight” HHH Eugene Jarecki’s documentary questions the relationship between the defense industry and government policy, and see President Eisenhower’s speech about the “military-industrial complex” as a prediction of the world that came to pass. This angry film ranges a bit, but some of its threads are powerful. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“The World’s Fastest Indian” HH A true story of New Zealand’s Burt Munro (Anthony Hopkins), who souped up an old Indian motorcycle and went off to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to try for a speed record. Not much sticks to the ribs here, but the film exudes affection and the Bonneville location shooting is cool. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Yours, Mine and Ours” H Excruciating remake of a 1968 comedy about a blended family of eighteen kids (and two parents: Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo). Not a laugh in the whole movie. (PG, for subject matter.)
