Film reviews

“The Last Holiday” HHH Queen Latifah as a frumpy New Orleans sales clerk who goes on a European spree after she receives a terminal diagnosis. An irresistible vehicle for Latifah, under director Wayne Wang’s refreshingly soft touch. (PG-13, for language.)

“Glory Road” HH A great true sports story gets the plastic Jerry Bruckheimer treatment. This one’s about the 1966 Texas Christian basketball team, the first squad to start five black players in the NCAA finals. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Hoodwinked” HH A “Rashomon” take on the little red riding hood story, with the particulars of the case treated as clues in a police procedural. Pretty funny for a while, and the computer animation is cool, but it has a sour aftertaste. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Tristan &Isolde” HH A classic Dark Ages love story is brought to life, with James Franco on the side of a British tribe and Sophia Myles the daughter of the Irish king. Their star-crossed love makes for a humorless but passable entertainment, produced by Ridley Scott. (PG-13, for violence.)

“One-The Movie” HH A documentary crew searches for the meaning of life, and tackles some famed experts (Robert Thurman, Deepak Chopra) for their comments on the subject. It’s more about making a documentary than the Answer, but some smart people say smart things. (Not rated; probably PG, for subject matter.)

“The Matador” HH A bad-mannered professional hit man (Pierce Brosnan) forms an awkward partnership with a suburban businessman (Greg Kinnear) while on a job. Some of the jokes land and Brosnan is seedy fun, so it’s a drag to admit this movie isn’t as terrific as it should be. (R, for language, violence, subject matter.)

“Casanova” HH History’s most notorious seducer (Heath Ledger) runs into love and the Inquisition in Venice. A smug romp that has little chemistry between its lovers and a smug approach overall. (R, for nudity, language, subject matter. History’s most notorious seducer (Heath Ledger.)

“Wolf Creek” H A scuzzy horror movie from Australia, about three young people wandering the outback who encounter a homicidal lunatic. The slow build-up is interesting, but the onslaught of torture and gore becomes truly ugly. (R, for violence, nudity, language.)

“Rumor Has It…” HH The amusing opening reels suggest that director Rob Reiner is back in his “When Harry Met Sally…” mode, as Jennifer Aniston suspects her parents might have been involved in the real-life story of “The Graduate.” The movie flubs the premise halfway through and never recovers. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“The Producers” HHH Not really a movie so much as a faithful presentation of the Mel Brooks stage musical, this over-the-top piece of razzmatazz is still awfully funny. Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick-both giving busy, stage-ready performances-are producers banking on a sure-fire flop (“Springtime for Hitler”) so they can keep their investors’ money. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“The Ringer” HH A surprisingly funny and humane movie that springs from a bad-taste premise: a man (Johnny Knoxville) pretends to be developmentally disabled so he can compete in the Special Olympics. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Munich ” HHHH Steven Spielberg looks at the secret Israeli squad that targeted Palestinian terrorists in retribution for the massacre of Israel’s 1972 Olympic team. Superb as a spy movie, the film also grapples with the moral price of assassination. Eric Bana stars. (R, for violence, nudity, language.)

“Breakfast on Pluto” HHHH A delightful and impossible-to-predict film from Irish director Neil Jordan, about a foundling who grows up to be a transvestite, searching for his parents. The film is solidly against seriousness, and is buoyed by the fine central performance of Cillian Murphy. (R, for language, violence, subject matter.)

“Fun with Dick and Jane” HH Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni, newly burned by a corporate meltdown, plan their revenge by turning to a life of crime. Some funny bits but nothing ties together, and eventually it peters out. (PG-13, for language.)

“Memoirs of a Geisha” HH Based on Arthur Golden’s beloved novel, about a girl abducted into the geisha life, and the success she makes of it. Some good eye candy here, but not much more than a designer movie. With Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“The Family Stone” HH One of those family-holiday-nightmare comedies, as an eldest son (Dermot Mulroney) brings home an uptight girlfriend (Sarah Jessica Parker) to meet the boisterous clan. Some chuckles, but a little grating overall. With Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Keane” HHH An irrational man searches for an abducted daughter-or so he says. Director Lodge Kerrigan creates a tantalizing guessing game, but also a true emotional journey, and Damian Lewis gives a terrific performance. (R, for language, nudity, subject matter.)

“Brokeback Mountain” HHHH Two cowboys come together in the summer of 1963, and can’t quite get over their mutual passion as their lives continue. Much more than its “gay cowboy” label, Ang Lee’s film is a superb Western, well acted by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. (R, for language, violence, nudity.)

“King Kong” HH Peter Jackson’s 187-minute remake of his favorite movie is a mystifyingly drawn-out movie, rife with eye-filling spectacle but off key. Kong himself, created through computer animation, is an impressive creation, but overall the film is exhausting. With Naomi Watts, Jack Black. (PG-13, for violence.)

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” HH The first book of C.S. Lewis’s beloved children’s series gets the Disney treatment, with mixed results. There’s real magic in the introduction of a magical world, but a tame approach and too many computer-animated characters fizzle things out. (PG, for violence.)

“Syriana” HH An ambitious take on the connections between the global oil industry and governments around the world-told through a complicated (and confusing) group of settings. George Clooney and Matt Damon are among the many characters in Stephen Gaghan’s film. (R, for violence and language.)

“Rent” HHH Big-screen version of the long-running Broadway musical, about a group of friends dealing with art, drugs, and AIDS in 1989-90 Manhattan. Big and broad and just a little corny, the thing comes across entertainingly for those who like this kind of brassy material. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“The Ice Harvest” HH A dark comedy about a Wichita lawyer (John Cusack) embezzling money from his crooked boss on Christmas Eve. Some good moments and a funny-desperate mood, but it’s really low-key, and there’s not enough Billy Bob Thornton in it. (R, for violence, language, nudity.)

“The Squid and the Whale” HHHH A family falls apart in Brooklyn in 1986, an event seen through the eyes of the two sons, age 16 and 12. The observations are dead-on and the acting is terrific in this funny indie film. Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney lead the cast. (R, for language, subject matter.)

“Capote” HHHH An elegant account of Truman Capote’s experiences researching and writing the “non-fiction novel” “In Cold Blood.” The movie’s moral dilemma is a bit too neat, but Philip Seymour Hoffman captures the fey writer to a T. (R, for language, violence.)

“Good Night, and Good Luck.” HHH George Clooney directed this black-and-white look at the showdown between newsman Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) and Senator Joseph McCarthy in 1953-54. The story is strong even if the approach is just a bit self-satisfied. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Wallace &Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” HHH The claymation characters from Britain’s Aardman studio return in this pun-filled pleasure about a mutated rabbit attacking vegetable patches. Very droll and understated when it needs to be, which is most of the time. (G)

“10th District Court” HHH Very simple camera set-ups in a Paris courtroom provide a good antidote to sensationalized “reality TV.” We observe real cases-petty crimes-and watch the accused try to justify themselves. (In French, with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably PG-13, for subject matter.)
