Mini reviews
“Bobby” HHH Emilio Estevez’s star-studded ensemble film about people at the Ambassador Hotel on the 1968 day that Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated there. The various stories are uneven, to say the least, and short on insight-but the use of RFK’s image and speeches is undeniably powerful. With Sharon Stone, Anthony Hopkins, William H. Macy. (R, for language, nudity, violence.)
“Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” HHHH British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen embodies a misogynistic, anti-Semitic visitor from Kazakhstan named Borat, who tours the U.S. and A. In a series of shaggy but hilarious improvised scenes, Borat descends upon unsuspecting dupes and horrifies them. The result is one of the funniest movies of this or any other millennium. (R, for language, nudity, subject matter.)
“Casino Royale” HHH A course correction for the James Bond series, with a new 007 (the terrific Daniel Craig) and a move away from the special-effects absurdities of the Pierce Brosnan era. Not everything works, but at least this one feels like a spy movie, not a 1990s action flick. (PG-13, for violence, language.)
“Deck the Halls” H Boring comedy with Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito as neighbors who battle when DeVito tries to mount the world’s most garish Christmas display at his house. It’s all out of a bad sitcom, with the two actors playing their usual selves. (PG, for subject matter.)
“Dj Vu” HH Cop Denzel Washington investigates a terrorist bombing in New Orleans, with the help of a super-secret government project that allows people to look four days into the past. Not much is plausible here, but the sci-fi premise (once it’s revealed to be a sci-fi premise) is reasonably enjoyable. (PG-13, for violence, language, subject matter.)
“Fast Food Nation” HHH A look at the way fast food affects a group of characters employed by a chain called Mickey’s, including the illegal immigrants at the Colorado meatpacking plant, counter workers, and a marketing manager (Greg Kinnear). Director Richard Linklater doesn’t avoid the pitfalls of the illustrated lecture, but much of the film has a fresh, experimental quality. (R, for language, violence, subject matter.)
“Flushed Away” HHH The animation studio that brought you “Curse of the Were-Rabbit” returns with this bigger, rapid-fire adventure about rats in the sewer world. Computer animation has replaced claymation, which might explain how some of the charm got lost, despite this film’s generally well-executed jokes. (PG, for subject matter.)
“For Your Consideration” HHH The new improvisational comedy from Christopher Guest and his troupe of gifted comedians; this time they take on Hollywood, and what happens when an actress (Catherine O’Hara) hears a rumor that she might snag an Oscar nomination. The comedy is very mild, more grins than guffaws, and one wants more from the best comics (Fred Willard, Eugene Levy, Ricky Gervais); but you’ll be laughing. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus” H A fictional musing on the life of 1960s photographer Diane Arbus (Nicole Kidman), who is seen here having a liberating relationship with a neighbor (Robert Downey, Jr.) whose body is covered with hair. This story takes place in la-la land, which seems much less interesting than the real world. (R, for nudity, language, subject matter.)
“Iraq in Fragments” HHH An Iraq documentary that looks at the Iraqi perspective, dividing itself into three sections that cover people in the Sunni, Shiite, and Kurdish worlds. An absorbing study, with a marked eye for visual beauty amidst the chaos. (In Arabic, Kurdish, and English, with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably R, for violence.)
“Little Children” HHH An observant and thoughtful film on lust and angst in the suburbs, as two married people (Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson) embark on an affair, and a convicted child molester (Jackie Earle Haley) returns to the neighborhood. Director Todd Field gives the film a pleasant, literary quality, and the acting, especially by Winslet, is superb. (R, for nudity, language, violence.)
“The Nativity Story” HHH A refreshingly plain look at the gospel story of Mary, Joseph, and the birth of Jesus, told without spectacle by director Catherine Hardwicke. She emphasizes the trust between Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac) and the humility of their surroundings. (PG, for violence.)
“Shut Up and Sing” HHH An unexpectedly absorbing documentary about what happened to the Dixie Chicks, the biggest-selling female group in music history, after they off-handedly dissed President Bush at a concert in 2003. The film is less about country music than people reacting to huge changes in their lives. (R, for language.)
“Stranger than Fiction” HH An IRS agent (Will Ferrell in dialed-down mode) begins hearing the voice of a novelist (Emma Thompson) in his head; he soon learns he is a character in her new novel. This philosophical farce has little feel for comedy and a general chilliness, although the scenes with Ferrell and a literary professor (Dustin Hoffman) are fun. With Maggie Gyllenhaal. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny” HH The heavy-metal duo Tenacious D (the delirious creation of comics Jack Black and Kyle Gass) comes to the big screen in the story of their rise to fame-and their duel with Satan for control of a magic guitar pick. It’s a scrappy movie, but Black has some hilarious moments. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“Turistas” H Travelers in Brazil are waylaid by a mad doctor who wants to harvest the organs of unsuspecting tourists. This nonsensical movie can’t match “Hostel” for gore, even as it might want to, but it doesn’t rise above the genre, either. With Josh Duhamel, Melissa George. (R, for violence, nudity, language.)
“Volver” HHH One of Pedro Almodovar’s best movies, a story of a mother (Penelope Cruz, re-discovered as a womanly actress) tending her teenage daughter and the sudden reappearance of her dead mother. It’s an amusing film, but also warm and melancholy. (In Spanish, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, subject matter.)
