Mini reviews

“Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” HHHH British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen embodies a misogynistic, anti-Semitic visitor from Kazakhstan named Borat, who tours the U.S. and A. In a series of shaggy but hilarious improvised scenes, Borat descends upon unsuspecting dupes and horrifies them. The result is one of the funniest movies of this or any other millennium. (R, for language, nudity, subject matter.)

“The Departed” HHHH A crackling crime opus from Martin Scorsese, remaking the Hong Kong thriller “Infernal Affairs.” An Irish gangster (Jack Nicholson) in Boston is tracked by an undercover cop (Leonardo DiCaprio) while his own crooked operative (Matt Damon) has assumed a position of authority in the police force. Suspense and shocking violence make for two and a half hours of excitement. (R, for violence, language, subject matter.)

“Flushed Away” HHH The animation studio that brought you “Curse of the Were-Rabbit” returns with this bigger, rapid-fire adventure about rats in the sewer world. Computer animation has replaced claymation, which might explain how some of the charm got lost, despite this film’s generally well-executed jokes. (PG, for subject matter.)

.

“Little Miss Sunshine” HHH A dysfunctional American family goes on a road trip, in a pre-digested movie that still has some hearty laughs in it. Good cast too, led by Steve Carell, Greg Kinnear, and Toni Collette. (R, for language, subject matter.)

“Man of the Year” HH Robin Williams riffs as a stand-up comedian whose campaign for president turns serious. The movie turns serious, too, with sloppy results, and director Barry Levinson leaves too many huge holes in logic. With Laura Linney. (PG-13, for language.)
