Mini reviews

“Being Julia” HH In London in 1938, a great stage diva (Annette Bening) indulges in an affair with a younger man-thus revitalizing her acting. This is a civilized movie, based on a Somerset Maugham story, but it doesn’t have much urgency. Jeremy Irons co-stars. (R, for language, subject matter.)

“De-Lovely” HH Bio of Cole Porter (Kevin Kline), focusing on his unique understanding with his wife Linda (Ashley Judd), who co-existed with his homosexuality. The dry treatment hardly does justice to one of the wittiest men of his century, and Porter’s songs come to mixed life with an all-star line-up on singers. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“Friday Night Lights ” HH Disappointing adaptation of the classic sports book about high-school football in the small town of Odessa, Texas. The movie has a frank take on the pressures of success, and the vices and privileges of star players-though eventually it roots for the home team. Billy Bob Thornton leads a good cast. (PG-13, for violence, language, subject matter.)

“The Grudge” HH A Hollywood remake of “Ju-On,” a Japanese horror franchise about a haunted house. This one provides more explanations than the original, but maintains a sense of spookiness and some good scares. Sarah Michelle Gellar stars. (R, for violence.)

“I (Heart) Huckabees” HHH “Three Kings” director David O. Russell delivers an “existential comedy” about a man (Jason Schwartzman) who hires detectives to figure out his life. A bright cast and larky spirit keep the movie going, even if it has a Swiss cheese quality at times. With Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts. (R, for language, subject.)

“Napoleon Dynamite” HHHH Funny and sweet and weird, this movie chronicles the life of a high-school student in a small town in Idaho. He is Napoleon (Jon Heder), who lives in a heightened state of aggressive cluelessness that has made him an outcast. Director Jared Hess treats this bizarre world with a precisely observed humor that is never cruel. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Shark Tale” HH In the style of “Shrek” comes this rapid-fire animated collection of pop-culture references. It’s about a small fish (voiced by Will Smith) who pretends to be a great shark slayer, much to the irritation of a Mafia-style Great White (Robert De Niro). Not too memorable, and it doesn’t have the heart of “Finding Nemo.” (PG, for subject matter.)

“Shaun of the Dead” HHH A very funny zombie romantic comedy, with an underachieving London bloke (co-writer Simon Pegg) suddenly realizing that he must battle the undead. Not a spoof, but a zombie movie with a very robust, very black sense of humor. (R, for violence, language.)

“Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” HHH A piece of technological wonder wed to a rather hollow story, this movie’s grand visions of vintage New York City and Shangri-La are a marvel to look at. Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow try to save the 1940s world-which is entirely computer-generated. Angelina Jolie co-stars. (PG, for violence.)

“Spider-Man 2” HH Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) returns, this time juggling college life while saving Manhattan from the nefarious Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). A few too many dialogue scenes (plus elaborate attempts to make the franchise into a trilogy) slow this one down, although the action is great and Kirsten Dunst turns in a touching performance. (PG-13, for violence.)

“Surviving Christmas” H Ben Affleck is a wealthy advertising guy who offers a schlumpy family $250,000 if he can spend the holidays with them. The thin premise never goes far enough to qualify as black comedy, although the cast gives it a spirited try. With James Gandolfini. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Team America: World Police” HHH From the “South Park” guys, a completely lewd, foul-mouthed, politically-incorrect spoof of Hollywood action movies, featuring a plot about terrorism. It’s all done with marionettes, of course, a style that provides many laughs-although by the end, when Hollywood liberals are being killed at a conference in North Korea, you may be reduced to staring at the screen in disbelief. (R, for language, violence, subject matter.)

“Vanity Fair” HHH The sprawling Thackeray novel focuses on Becky Sharp (Reese Witherspoon), an orphan making her way through vicious London society. A beautiful physical production with a great cast, the movie doesn’t quite hold itself together, and gets a little loopy toward the end. Mira Nair directs; with Gabriel Bryne, James Purefoy. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“Vera Drake” HHH That chronicler of British striving, Mike Leigh, directed this look at a salt-of-the-earth type (Imelda Staunton) who performs illegal abortions in 1950 London. The uncanny ear for dialogue and the superb collection of actors give the movie a light from within its dreary setting. (R, for subject matter.)

“Wimbledon” HH Paul Bettany is a washed-up English tennis player in his last fling at Wimbledon, and Kirsten Dunst is a hothead American on the rise. Their romance follows an absolutely predictable script, enhanced by the star power and the location shooting. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
