Movie reviews

“The Departed” HHHH A crackling crime opus from Martin Scorsese, remaking the Hong Kong thriller “Infernal Affairs.” An Irish gangster (Jack Nicholson) in Boston is tracked by an undercover cop (Leonardo DiCaprio) while his own crooked operative (Matt Damon) has assumed a position of authority in the police force. Suspense and shocking violence make for two and a half hours of excitement. (R, for violence, language, subject matter.)

“Employee of the Month” H Blah comedy set in a huge bulk-discount store, where two employees vie for a coveted title. Villain Dax Shepard is a lot more fun than hero Dane Cook, and Jessica Simpson is, well, nothing. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.

“Hollywoodland” HH Some speculation on the death of George Reeves, the actor who played the TV “Superman” in the 1950s. That subject is intriguing and Ben Affleck has a ball playing Reeves, but the film has a dreary feel and bogs down in an investigation of Reeves’ mysterious death. With Adrien Brody, Diane Lane. (R, for language, violence, subject matter.)

“Man of the Year” HH Robin Williams riffs as a stand-up comedian whose campaign for president turns serious. The movie turns serious, too, with sloppy results, and director Barry Levinson leaves too many huge holes in logic. With Laura Linney. (PG-13, for language.)

“School for Scoundrels” H A bummer about a shy guy (“Napoleon Dynamite” star Jon Heder) who enrolls in a self-empowerment course taught by a lying, cheating rogue (Billy Bob Thornton). Not much works here, and Heder is a disappointment. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“The Science of Sleep” HH Gale Garcia Bernal is an artist adrift in Paris, but his mind is a feverish place of fantasies. Director Michel Gondry lets loose in this whimsical comedy, but the film sorely needs something to anchor the weightlessness of it. (In French and English, with English subtitles.) (R, for language, nudity.)
