Movie reviews

“Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” HH Will Ferrell plays an idiotic San Diego anchorman in the 1970s, threatened by the arrival of female reporter Christina Applegate. It’s not as rat-a-tat funny as it should be, but the supporting players get their share of laughs and the movie is easy to like. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Before Sunset” HHHH Nine years after the one-night romance of “Before Sunrise,” the two characters meet again in Paris, and share an urgent conversation over the course of an afternoon. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy return to their roles, and director Richard Linklater guides them through an amusing, poignant interlude on the subject of love, fate, and time. (R, for language.)

“The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi” HHH The Japanese filmmaker-actor Takeshi Kitano takes on the familiar figure of a blind samurai, who stumbles into a local turf war. The movie drifts occasionally, but Kitano’s presence (and a taste for musical numbers) keeps it going. (In Japanese, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence.)

“The Bourne Supremacy” HHH Sequel to the 2002 hit, with Matt Damon returning as the amnesiac spy Jason Bourne. It’s a cat-and-mouse game with Bourne and his former CIA comrades, with less freshness than the first film but still some hard, deglamorized moments. (PG-13, for violence, language.)

“Code 46” HHH It may be too muted for its own good, but this futuristic love story has the feeling of a confusing but not unpleasant dream. Tim Robbins and the amazing Samantha Morton violate a law involving cloning. (R, for subject matter, nudity.)

“Collateral” HHHH Michael Mann’s cool nocturnal thriller about a cabbie (Jamie Foxx) who picks up a professional hit man (Tom Cruise) and is stuck driving him to his jobs. The two actors are strong playing against type, and Mann’s feeling for the nighttime underworld is keen. (R, for violence, language.)

“Control Room” HHH A look at the workings of Al Jazeera, the Arab TV network, during the Iraq war. The movie doesn’t settle many questions, and it can’t be described as objective, but it offers a provocative look at another perspective. (In English and Arabic, with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably R, for violence.)

“The Corporation” HHH An analysis of the modern corporation, which when put on the psychiatric couch turns out to have a psychopathic personality. The movie sprawls across many subjects and gets into a lecturing mode, but it makes its share of scary, forceful points. (Not rated; probably PG-13, for subject matter.)

“De-Lovely” HH Bio of Cole Porter (Kevin Kline), focusing on his unique understanding with his wife Linda (Ashley Judd), who co-existed with his homosexuality. The dry treatment hardly does justice to one of the wittiest men of his century, and Porter’s songs come to mixed life with an all-star line-up on singers. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“Facing Windows” HHH A pleasant reverie of a movie, about a housewife (the lovely Giovanna Mezzogiorno) who daydreams about the man across the way, and an elderly amnesiac who enters her family’s life. (In Italian, with English subtitles.) (R, for subject matter.)

“Fahrenheit 9/11” HHH A passionate broadside against the Bush administration, wrought by Michael Moore in 116 roaring, reeling minutes. Moore’s tactics are often slippery, but in the second half of the film, a brief on the Iraq war, he captures some devastating material. (R, for violence, language.)

“Father and Son” HHH Russian director Alexander Sokurov takes a non-narrative look at the intense bond between a young father and his military-age son. An obscure film, probably with specific Russian cultural meanings, but visually haunting. (In Russian, with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably PG-13, for subject matter.)

“Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” HHH A raunchy, R-rated comedy of the “American Pie” school, about two college grads (John Cho and Kal Penn) who encounter obstacles on the road to getting hamburgers. Bodily-function and drug jokes abound, most of them funny. (R, for language, nudity, subject matter.)

“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” HHHH A fluid and spooky third installment in J.K. Rowling’s series about the boy wizard (Daniel Radcliffe). The three young actors are especially good this time, and director Alfonso Cuaron brings a dark, propulsive style to the movie; there’s less cuteness and more sense of adventure. (PG, for language, violence, subject matter.)

“I, Robot” HH Will Smith plays a detective in 2035, investigating why the head of a robotics company died on the eve of the new robot roll-out. Loosely inspired by the classic Isaac Asimov stories, the film lets the interesting ideas at the core of the story get overwhelmed by the mandatory action sequences. (PG-13, for violence, language.)

“Intimate Strangers” HHH A tantalizing comic-dramatic intrigue from director Patrice Leconte, about a woman (Sandrine Bonnaire) who spills out her secrets to a new psychiatrist-except he (Fabrice Luchini) isn’t a psychiatrist, just a very interested accountant. (In French, with English subtitles.) (R, for subject matter.)

“Ju-On: The Grudge” HHH A popular Japanese horror picture in the tradition of “The Ring.” This one’s a series of interlocking sequences about people unfortunate enough to visit a house of violence. (In Japanese, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence.)

“Little Black Book” HH A crisply staged comedy that falters in the strangeness (and implausibility) of its third act. Brittany Murphy plays a curious girlfriend who investigates her beau’s ex-flames. Holly Hunter and Julianne Nicholson provide support. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“The Manchurian Candidate” HHH A remake of the 1962 classic, with much updated and changed. Gulf War veteran Denzel Washington believes political candidate Liev Schreiber may have something wrong with him, something that happened during the war. Jonathan Demme builds tension, but the film lacks the perversity and humor of the original. With Meryl Streep. (R, for violence, language.)

“Maria Full of Grace” HHH A young Colombian woman agrees to become a carrier for heroine smugglers, swallowing packets of drugs for a flight to New York. The melodrama builds suspense, and the performance of Catalina Sandino Moreno lights up the screen with sympathy. (In Spanish, with English subtitles.) (R, for subject matter.)

“My Sister Maria” HH A bizarre documentary by actor-director Maximilian Schell about his older sister, who was a celebrated actress in German cinema. It’s hard to tell how lucid the aging Maria still is, and even harder to figure out the director’s obscure approach. (In German, with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably PG, for subject matter.)

“Napoleon Dynamite” HHHH Funny and sweet and weird, this movie chronicles the life of a high-school student in a small town in Idaho. He is Napoleon (Jon Heder), who lives in a heightened state of aggressive cluelessness that has made him an outcast. Director Jared Hess treats this bizarre world with a precisely observed humor that is never cruel. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Open Water” HHH A gripping low-budget film, shot on video, about a couple on a diving trip in the Caribbean who find themselves left behind in the middle of the ocean. The sharks are real, and so is the suspense in this ingenious picture. (R, for language, nudity, violence.)

“Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement” H Sequel in which the former American teen (Anne Hathaway), now princess of Genovia, must get married in a month or sacrifice her royal station. This one is strictly going through the motions, unless you’re a ‘tweener. With Julie Andrews. (G)

“Riding Giants” HHH An entertaining surfing movie that provides background on the school of “big-wave” surfing, with emphasis on old-school pioneers such as Greg Noll and the new Achilles, Laird Hamilton. From “Dogtown and Z-Boys” director Stacy Peralta. (PG-13, for language.)

“Seducing Doctor Lewis” HH A French-Canadian seacoast town tries to convince a visiting doctor to stay in their depressed community, using elaborate ruses. This cutesy echo of “Waking Ned Devine” is like a bowl of sugar topped with maple syrup. (In French, with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably PG, for subject matter.)

“She Hate Me” H Crazy, long-winded nonsense from Spike Lee, about an executive (Anthony Mackie) sidelines by business fraud who hires himself out as a sperm donor to lesbians. Weirdly, the film has its entertaining moments, despite being a complete mess. (R, for nudity, language, subject matter.)

“Spider-Man 2” HH Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) returns, this time juggling college life while saving Manhattan from the nefarious Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina). A few too many dialogue scenes (plus elaborate attempts to make the franchise into a trilogy) slow this one down, although the action is great and Kirsten Dunst turns in a touching performance. (PG-13, for violence.)

“Super Size Me” HHH Morgan Spurlock decided to eat three meals a day at McDonald’s for a month and document the results. He takes some getting used to, but this movie, which also looks at the pervasiveness of fast food in general, is an entertaining and alarming picture. (Not rated; probably PG-13, for nudity, language.)

“Touch of Pink” HH A gay man of South Asian heritage barricades himself in the closet when his meddlesome mom calls him home to Toronto for a traditional wedding. He gets witty advice from the ghost of Cary Grant (Kyle MacLachlan). The movie has a light touch, if not much originality (R, for language, subject matter.)

“The Village” HHH A new spook show from “Sixth Sense” director M. Night Shyamalan, about villagers frightened of the dangers of the woods surrounding them. It’s a little too much the allegorical number, and more than a little silly, but Shymalan knows how to create a dreadful mood. With Joaquin Phoenix and an extraordinary new actress, Bryce Dallas Howard. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“We Don’t Live Here Anymore” HHH A quartet of good performances (and, in Laura Dern’s case, a great one) raise this somber look at adultery into an interesting, if difficult, chamber drama. Mark Ruffalo and Peter Krause play academics interested in each other’s wives. With Naomi Watts. (R, for language, subject matter.)

“Without a Paddle” HH Three goofs travel down an Oregon river in search of D.B. Cooper’s lost money. Too much beer-commercial sentiment, but there are some hilarious moments, and newcomer Dax Shepard is a real find. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
