What: A winding, sometimes mucky forest walk southeast of Enumclaw that descends to the north bank of the White River.
Where: From southbound I-5, take Exit 142A toward Auburn and North Bend. Take the Highway 164 exit toward Enumclaw. Turn left onto Auburn Way S. (Highway 164) and continue for about 15 miles. Turn left onto Highway 410, traveling east. Turn right onto Mud Mountain Dam Road about four miles outside of Enumclaw and continue to the parking lot.
Length: 5-plus miles roundtrip, depending on exploration.
Difficulty: Intermediate.
Beginning elevation: 1,300 feet.
Lowest point: 900 feet.
Restrictions: Day use only.
Maps: Green Trails No. 237 (Enumclaw).
Notes: After parking, walk back toward the entrance and turn right onto the trail that runs along the fence. Follow the path away from the fence and into the forest, moving parallel to the White River canyon (watch out for mountain bikers). Reach a road a little less than one mile in and turn right, then make a quick left. Venture deeper into the forest, where wood planks provide clean passage past muddy swamp-like terrain and large uprooted cedar trees that present enormous, clinging hunks of earth. At 2.1 miles follow an access road down to the north bank of the White River and explore.
