Museum of Flight honoring veterans

Memorial Day weekend at the Museum of Flight in Seattle boasts a variety of events for the family.

The featured event, honoring World War II veterans, spotlights the flyers who supported the invasion of Europe. At 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, panels of D-Day flyers will share their experiences and take questions from the audience. Speakers include B-17 pilot Ike Alhadeff, P-51 pilot Kelly Gross and B-26 bombardier-navigator Kenneth Brown.

At 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, youngsters can explore space artifacts, see flying machines and learn how they fly at the Super Soaring Space Toys workshops. Make your own flying space toy to take home.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, master aviation photographer John Dibbs will discuss the art of air-to-air aviation photography. Dibbs will also be available to sign his prints.

An author presentation and book signing with Kenneth Brown, author of “Marauder Man: The Story of the Bomber that Made D-Day Possible,” will be at 1 p.m. Sunday. Brown will discuss the contribution of the Martin B-26 Marauder medium bomber and its brave crews to the Allied success on D-Day.

Monday events include: Noon to 1 p.m., the Boeing Employees Concert Band performs patriotic favorites in honor of America’s military heroes.

The museum honors World War II veterans with a formal Memorial Day ceremony from 1 to 1:30 p.m. featuring remarks by D-Day veteran Walter Bergstrom. A special memorial recognition of Washingtonians who died in the line of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom will also be part of the ceremony.

“The Longest Day,” a classic Hollywood take on D-Day, will play at 2:30 p.m. in the William M. Allen Theater.

All Memorial Day weekend events are free with regular museum admission. And on Monday, admission to the museum is free for veterans and current U.S. military personnel.

The museum is set to open its Personal Courage Wing on June 6, the 60th anniversary of D-Day. See next week’s A&E for more.
