One of the brightest lights of the Great White Way is coming to Seattle.
At age 79, musical theater giant Stephen Sondheim will make his first visit to Seattle for “A Life in the Theater: An Onstage Conversation with Stephen Sondheim &Frank Rich.”
The event is at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 at Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Seattle. Tickets are on sale now and range from $48 to $78. Call 206-215-4747 or go to www.benaroyahall.org.
Sondheim, called “the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American musical theater” by the New York Times, journeys to Seattle for what promoters believe will be an enormously entertaining and informative on-stage conversation with New York Times columnist Frank Rich.
The two respected men took “A Life in the Theater” on the road in 2008, but the show never made it to Seattle. The show earned rave reviews and packed houses with Rich asking questions and Sondheim offering up stories and anecdotes, taking fodder from his more than 50 years in musical theater.
Sondheim may be the nation’s most well-known contemporary composer-lyricist with musicals that include “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Company,” “Follies,” “A Little Night Music,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Sunday in the Park with George,” “Into the Woods,” “Assassins” and “Passion.” He also wrote lyrics to “West Side Story” and “Gypsy.” He’s won seven Tonys, multiple Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer in drama for “Sunday in the Park with George.”
