After five years, the Everett Craft Beer Festival was effectively shut down earlier this year, meaning that Snohomish County lost its largest beerfest.
In its stead, McMenamins Anderson School is stepping up to throw its own beer festival with plenty of Snohomish County representation. Saturday’s inaugural Anderson Summer School Brewfest will showcase more than 30 Washington breweries, including 18 from Snohomish County, and four cideries this weekend.
“We spoke with a number of local breweries, and they were excited about it,” said Jared Prince, general manager at Anderson School. “The timing felt good this year to do something like this.”
The Anderson School Brewfest is in a long line of McMenamins’ beerfests, many of which have been pouring beer for more than 20 years. In his former job at St. Francis School, Prince helped kick off the first High Gravity Extravaganza beerfest, so he’s experienced in starting a new tradition.
The inaugural Anderson School Brewfest will run from noon to 10 p.m. July 29 in Haynes’ Hall and Haynes’ Square, enough room for 800 people, Prince said. There will be live music in the square, including from bands Bigfoot Mojo, The Talbott Brothers and Ragged Union.
Bothell breweries are getting an especially strong spotlight at the brewfest. Along with Anderson School, there are seven breweries and a cidery within a 5-minute drive of the brewfest, including Bothell breweries Foggy Noggin Brewing, Decibel Brewing and Watts Brewing.
Along with the brewfest, McMenamins, which stresses local history throughout its properties, will be hosting a speaker series of faculty from the University of Washington-Bothell called Pub Night Talks. The talks will be held in Haynes’ Hall at 7 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month. All talks are free and open to all ages.
The next discussion is by Dan Jaffe and is called “Planes, Trains and Mountain Tops: The Adventures of One Scientist and His Students Studying the Impacts of Humans on Planet Earth.” Future discussions will be on NASA missions, vaccines and greenhouse gases.
