I was sitting at my desk, “working,” when I realized I should come up with some sort of weekly feature for this blog.
Each Thursday, I’ll link to videos that, at the very least, should make for a good three-minute break from your own work. This week, we’ve got a live performance from the Arcade Fire, the new music video from the Hives, and a TV commercial featuring a gorilla.
I’m going to try to bypass YouTube as often as possible, so if that gives you trouble with a clip, e-mail me.
Arcade Fire – “Keep the Car Running” – Live
Arcade Fire crank through “Keep the Car Running” in this preview of their live performance on Austin City Limits. If you saw the group on their recent tour, don’t expect any surprises. It’s their usual display of anthemic paranoia.
As for the full broadcast, well, some listings have the performance airing this Saturday at 6 p.m. on KCTS, Channel 9. Others have that slot filled by the Lawrence Welk Show’s tribute to Frank Sinatra — no joke. Instead, the Arcade Fire may air at midnight, Dec. 23, on KCTS.
So what the hell, set those TiVos, but don’t bank on getting the show.
The Hives — “Tick Tick Boom” — Music video
The Swedish punk group gets installed in a museum as a King Kong-sized art exhibit. After a bomb goes off in Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist’s palm, the group goes on a rampage, destroying exhibits and killing a dog. Does that sound funny? No? It sort of is. Sort of.
Incidentally, I’ll be reviewing the Hives’ newest CD, “The Black and White Album,” in my Monday music column. Just a heads up, there, yoots.
A gorilla, clearly — “In the Air Tonight” — Commercial
This is exactly what a gorilla should look like when it plays drums to Phil Collins — intense, focused and hairy.
