Laura Abel will make you forget about Carol Channing and Barbra Streisand.
Abel’s commanding voice and infectious stage presence will make you forget there ever was another Dolly Gallagher Levi — at least during this two-hour, absolutely delightful Northwest Savoyards’ production of “Hello D
olly!”
Abel’s voice is a boom box of sound. Her comic timing is spot on. And the chemistry between her and her snarky leading man, half a millionaire Horace Vandergelder — her real-life, off-stage husband Mark Abel — is as genuine as a silver dollar.
Laura Abel will bring you in the door to see “Dolly.” Her talents along with those of director Janet Pope and the rest of the Northwest Savoyards cast and crew will keep you smiling, laughing and tapping your foot all the way through.
There’s really not a bad voice in this show. Standouts include Ken Martinez asCornelius Hackl; Vaughn Wolfe as Barnaby Tucker and Amanda Reed Bailey as Irene Malloy. Big applause for music director David Spring.
And every song is a hit. Special anticipation builds up for the song “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” and Ken Martinez does not let us down as Cornelius belts out this beauty. When Amanada Reed Bailey sings “Ribbons Down My Back,” there will be goose bumps down yours.
During the number “Before the Parade Passes By” members of the cast had to march through and line up in the aisles and, by necessity, created an intimate parade atmosphere like you’d experience during any small-town July Fourth event.
That is one thing about “Dolly!” that appeared to be a challenge for the Savoyards. It’s a grand show and it should be and its grandness was just barely contained on the small stage of Historic Everett Theatre. But the Savoyards pulled off this production in grand style, managing some magnificent costumes — DodiRose Zooropa — and complex choreography –Phil Lacey — in a space that was bursting at the seams.
So bravo to the Savoyards for doing what they do best — classic musical theater.
