Northwest Savoyards promise an upbeat ‘Joseph’

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”: Laura Abel said audiences will definitely delight in the diversity of music in the Northwest Savoyards’ new production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” which opens today at Historic Everett Theater.

Audiences will also be impressed with the choreography and the hilarious mock-Elvis number. And then there’s the children’s chorus.

“They are just precious, so I’m really excited about this show,” Abel said.

Abel, a Savoyards’ veteran performer who is taking a backstage role to be one of the show’s producers, said the youngest child actor is 4 and there are kids up to age 14.

They are talented and impressive and there are several sister groups involved, Abel said.

“It’s nice is able to have families involved in this show,” said Abel. “Our musical director’s two daughters are in the cast as well as her husband so it’s multi-generational.”

“Joseph” is the collaboration of that legendary musical theater team Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber based on the “coat of many colors” story of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis.

It’s the story of how Joseph’s brothers sold him off to become a slave and how Joseph ultimately triumphs in the end, Abel said.

The performance will include a combo band on stage and will offer all types of music, from country to rock ‘n’ roll and a “really fun spin on Elvis,” Abel said.

Actor Gene Ma, who sings bass and has performed with Seattle’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society, is taking on the pseudo Elvis role, which Abel described as “a hoot.”

“It’s going to bring down the house,” she said.

Joseph is played by Jason Fowler, who Abel said has a remarkable voice.

Samantha Routh is the Narrator, whose voice has “good pop power to it,” Abel said.

There’s a quality ensemble of singers with solid directing by Krista Erickson, who has done choreography in the past for the Savoyards’ productions of “Annie” and “Seussical,” Abel said.

“It’s a great celebration,” Abel said of the production. “Without giving anything away, this show will make the audiences feel upbeat and come curtain call, they will love this show.”

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” opens at 8 tonight at Historic Everett Theater, 2911 Colby Ave., Everett. Shows are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 13.

Tickets are $23.50 and $20.50. Call 425-258-6766 or online at www.etix.com.
