Fantasy island: If you’ve been dreaming of remodeling your kitchen or spicing up your bedroom, you might be struggling to figure out what style you like best. Interior designers recommend browsing magazines and putting together a binder full of clippings that inspire or move you.

Houzz.com aims to cut to the design chase by offering the same experience online with thousands of photos you can easily browse. Seven styles are represented, including Asian, contemporary, eclectic, Mediterranean, modern, traditional and tropical. You can also browse photos by 18 space types, such as dining room, hall, exterior or wine cellar.

If you register for the free site, you can also save your favorite concepts and photos into personalized, shareable idea books.

Professional designers, architects and contractors can upload their project photos for free to promote their businesses and styles.

And … this just in: Seattle is now one of the major metropolitan areas featured, including more than 150 photos from four professionals in Seattle, with more coming.

Going down: If you live on a beach or bluff in Snohomish County and want to protect your shore, now is the time to sign up for one of two free workshops.

The 2009 Shoreline Resident Workshops include lectures and a field trip in which landowners learn how to prevent erosion, manage runoff, prune trees safely and landscape for the coastal environment.

Workshops will be offered from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 28 at Legion Memorial Park, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett, and from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14 at Mukilteo City Hall, 11930 Cyrus Way, Mukilteo.

Light lunch will be served and participants will also receive free plants.

Register by contacting Jacquelyn Styrna at 425-357-6028 or at sno.shorestewards@wsu.edu. Leave a message with your full name, contact information and the number of people you’d like to register. Space is limited.
