Study up: If you want to get seriously smart in the garden, now is the time to consider taking one of the cool fall horticulture classes at Edmonds Community College, which run through Dec. 11.

Lawn Establishment (Horticulture 281) is from 8 to 11:30 a.m., Thursdays, Oct. 16 to 30. Learn about lawn installation, including soil and site preparation, sodding and seeding. Students will practice techniques. Cost is $75.80 plus admission fees.

Landscape Lighting (Horticulture 277) is from 1 to 4:50 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Dec. 2 to 9. Acquire technical knowledge and skills to create more garden drama and exotic nighttime effects with lights. Cost is $75.80 plus admission fees.

Take years off your home with these eight updates:

Paint a room: Do any of your rooms look drab and worn, with walls and woodwork full of scuffed or fading paint? Or perhaps your wall color is dated and could benefit from a hip new palette.

Replace pillows: Chuck the tattered, out-of-style accent pillows. Check out your favorite home-interior stores to see what’s new. Or recover your old forms with fresh fabrics that complement your sofa or bed ensemble.

Freshen wood furnishings: Attack nicks and dings with a stain stick, covering up those boo-boos that make them look older than their years.

Do some deep cleaning: Scrub walls and woodwork, polish silver, scour tile grout and wash windows.

Weed out artificial plants: Do some interior weeding by tossing the old fakes. When you replace them, you’re going to be blown away by today’s faux greens.

Edit accessories: Simplify. Remove pieces you aren’t crazy about and find new ways to showcase your favorites.

Replace fixtures: Light fixtures, faucets, doorknobs and cabinet pulls are easy changes for great effect.

New window treatments: New curtains will dramatically update the look of a room.
