Nuts and bolts: Monte Cristo nominations

Monte Cristo nominations: Do you know any Everett residents or business owners who take exceptional pride in the upkeep of their property?

They might be good candidates for the city’s 15th annual Monte Cristo Awards. You can even nominate yourself or a relative.

Nominations for the awards, established in 1994 by the city’s Office of Neighborhoods, are due Tuesday.

Honors in three categories will be awarded Oct. 8.

Categories include “Pride of the Neighborhood” for homes consistently well kept with green and colorful landscapes; “Rejuvenation and Transformation” for homes recently refreshed with new paint, landscaping or other major improvements; and “Neighborhood Friendly Business” for commercial sites that have attractive landscaping and facades.

Nomination forms are available at www.ci.everett.wa.us, Everett Library branches and other city sites.

Rosy fests: Heritage Roses Northwest will showcase a variety of hard-to-find heirloom roses from noon to 5 p.m. June 21 as part of a rose festival at the Antique Rose Farm, 12220 Springhetti Road, Snohomish.

Gardeners are welcome to bring roses for display between 9 and 11 a.m. See antiquerosefarm.com or call 360-568-1919 for more details.

The Tri-Valley Rose Society’s annual rose festival will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 20 at Christianson’s Nursery, 15806 Best Road, Mount Vernon. See www.christiansonsnursery.com for more information.

Free advice: Wouldn’t it be nice to hire a garden designer? Now you can for free — for only 30 minutes — as part of Meet the Designer Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 20 at Sunnyside Nursery in Marysville.

Eight local garden designers from the Snohomish area will meet with gardeners by appointment. Call the nursery before June 20 to schedule a time slot.

Gardeners should bring numerous photos printed on 8½-by-11 paper of an area that needs designing. Gardeners should also take measurements of the areas that need designing and plot them on a piece of paper, making sure to note which direction is north. Details about slopes, wet areas, utilities and view lines may also be helpful.

Call 425-334-2002 to make an appointment. See www.sunnysidenursery.net for more information.
