Nuts and bolts: Snohomish contractor wins gardening awards

Garden show payoff: Skeptics thought 30-year-old Brent Bissell with B. Bissell General Contractors of Snohomish was crazy when he volunteered to build not one but two elaborate display gardens at the Northwest Flower &Garden Show last week.

Bissell, however, came out ahead.

His display garden installations — “Sky’s the Limit” and “Welcome to Your Weekend” — won two of the show’s three gold medals.

“Sky’s the Limit,” designed by first-time show designer Rebecca Cole of New York, was a rooftop patio garden that also won the Founder’s Cup (Best in Show), the Sunset Western Living Award and the Seattle Home &Lifestyle Magazine Award.

“I’m really pleased,” said Bissell, who now has six show display gardens under his belt, including three previous gold medals with “Welcome to Your Weekend” designer Karen Stefonick of Le Jardin Landscape Design of Seattle.

Seven other display gardens received silver medals, seven more received bronze and six received crystal awards. It was tough judging all around, Bissell said. In 2006, for example, seven gardens received gold medals.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” Bissell said. “I’m proud of both gardens.”
