You might call Larry Munn the plastic surgeon of porcelain.
In just one day, Munn can bring years back to your bathtub with a face-lift that will likely cost you under $500.
Munn doesn’t just do porcelain tubs. He puts new life back into fiberglass tubs, countertops and antique clawfoot tubs.
Munn is owner, operator and sole employee of Amazing Reglazing. Though based in Oak Harbor, Munn travels as far south as Tacoma and as north as Blaine, putting the shine back in bathrooms.
Munn will be at the Everett Home &Garden Show displaying a bathtub model that illustrates before-and-after results. He might also feature an antique claw foot tub that he’s reclaimed from a farmer’s field and reglazed to a modern luster.
Munn says there are a number of reasons customers choose him: His refinishing process saves up to 80 percent of the cost of replacing a tub, he can generally do a job in one day and the result can last about 30 years.
That is, under most scenarios.
“You don’t want to be washing a Doberman pinscher or a Rottweiler in there and they are clawing for their life to get out,” Munn joked. “But even if a sledgehammer fell in there, I could fix it.”
Munn calls his reglazing system one that brings awesome results with a standard price of $475. He sometimes throws in a nonskid bathtub bottom for free.
Munn started a painting company in 1987 and then branched out into bathtubs seven years ago. A year and half ago, Munn, who is now 43, concentrated exclusively on bathtubs.
Often asked to compare his product with companies that will refit a tub liner over an old tub, Munn claimed that refitting a tub can lead to moisture buildup and that the process costs thousands more.
Working with tubs for so long, Munn said he’s been surprised how many different kinds are out there. He’s especially fond of antique claw foot tubs.
He told the story about what he described as a really cool claw foot tub he saw in a farmer’s field in Sedro-Woolley. He really wanted the tub and asked the farmer what he’d charge for it. The farmer told Munn that he was using the tub as a water trough for the cows. He told Munn he had to replace his water trough with a brand new one. Oh, and bring him a rooster.
Munn said his fiance’s uncle just happened to have a rooster. He brought the farmer the rooster in a bird cage. Munn got his claw foot tub.
“I reglazed it and actually traded it to my fiance’s uncle for an engagement ring,” Munn said. “The ring had lots and lots of carats.”
