‘October Romance’ is theme of Everett Symphony opener

It stands to reason that for most couples with busy lives, it’s difficult to come up with a date night.

Well, the Everett Symphony is helping to take the guess work out of romance.

Starting with their season opening called “October Romance,” the symphony is providing themes this season, such as a night in Paris, a celebration of Burt Bacharach and a celestial voyage to help couples plan their special evenings of intimacy — and beautiful music, said the symphony’s executive director Jody Matthews.

“What we do for people is give them a date night, a kind of a fun theme to hang their hat on for the date, so people will see “October Romance” or “Evening in Paris” and think ‘that’s a fun thing to do on a date,’ ” Matthews said.

And what better start off to a season of dating than “October Romance,” the symphony’s kick-off concert which starts at 8 tonight at Everett Civic Auditorium.

This is an evening of selections that will make you think about walking hand-in-hand through the fallen leaves of autumn or sitting cuddled up before a fire.

“It’s all very romantic music and Tchaikovsky, you can’t get any more romantic than that because all you can think of is all the dancing and beauty,” Matthews said. “The violin concerto is just amazing. So there’s a real romantic group of songs that kind of get you thinking about the autumn.”

The program includes “Les Preludes” by Franz Liszt, Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5” and the popular “Violin Concerto No. 1” by Max Bruch.

The selections will also showcase the talents of guest violinist Angela Fuller, the concertmaster of the Houston Symphony.

A Seattle native, Fuller is the stepdaughter of Everett Symphony’s bass player Joe Bynum and has known Everett Symphony conductor Paul-Elliott Cobbs for years, Matthews said.

Matthews recently received an e-mail from George John, a Houston resident who got to hear Fuller play in person.

John wrote:

“Just want to let you know that Angela Fuller’s Bruch is simply fantastic. I heard it live yesterday with the Houston Symphony. I knew that she was a fine musician, but I had no idea I would hear a world-class interpretation of this work, one which strongly moved me (to tears). You are in for a treat! Don’t miss this!”
