Oh say, can you eat: Tomorrow, remember that America isn’t only about colonies uniting together in a mutual loathing of that dastardly King George III and his high tea prices — oh, so high!
This Independence Day, remember it’s also about 50 states providing food for each others’ barbecues.
The U.S. Census Bureau compiled a look at the odds, which also provide a glimpse of America’s bounty. The statistics show:
About 1 in 4: Hot dogs and pork sausages come from Iowa, home to 17.6 million market hogs and pigs this year.
About 4 in 10: Baked beans come from North Dakota, which in 2007 grew 42 percent of U.S. dry, edible beans.
About 3 in 5: The likelihood that corn on the cob was harvested in either Florida, California, Georgia or New York. The states provided 60 percent of the nation’s sweet corn in 2007.
About 1 in 6: Roughly speaking, the chance that beef came from Texas.
About 1 in 2: The odds that potato salad and potato chips used spuds from either Idaho or Washington, growers of 52 percent of U.S. potatoes in 2007.
