On Tuesday, indie folk rock act Okkervil River overwhelmed its server by putting up a free album for fans.
Today, the site seems to be handling those on the prowl for “Golden Opportunities Mixtape,” which includes songs written by Joni Mitchell, the Fugs, and Randy Newman, along with a track popularized by Nina Simone.
The album can be downloaded here.
Outside of one Okkervil River song, the 2002 track “Listening to Otis Redding at Home During Christmas,” the nine-song album includes covers of Newman’s “Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear,” Mitchell’s “The Blonde in the Bleachers,” the Fugs “I Want to Know,” and “Do What You Gotta Do,” a Simone song.
While the new album, largely recorded live, is less rocking than Okkervil River’s last album, the thrilling 2007 release “The Stage Names,” it still showcases lead singer Will Sheff’s beaten down and naked-sounding vocals.
The Okkervil River album comes on the heels of free music from Radiohead and the Black Kids, both which scratched an itch for the indie rock crowd.
