Outdoor events: Fishing, cheap gear, free days, more

Snow fun: A book launch party for “Backcountry Ski &Snowboard Routes” is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Mountaineers Program Center in Seattle. Get more info here.

For parents: The author of “Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Kids from Nature-Deficit Disorder” will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall in Seattle. Tickets are $20. Richard Louv will present research on the impacts nature has on kids’ growth, health and creativity. Get more info and buy tickets here.

Backyard birds: The Oak Harbor Garden Club offers a video presentation, “Birds, Backyard Habitat and Beyond,” with Craig and Joy Johnson at the monthly meeting Tuesday at the Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, 1050 SE Ireland St. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. and the talk starts at 11:15. The Johnsons’ books will be for sale following the meeting, which is open to the public. Call garden club president Joyce Hollywood at 360-678-7056 for more information.

Gear: The Mountaineers will have a gear sale at their Seattle Program Center at 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. New and gently used gear will be for sale. They will also have representatives from all of their various activities there to answer questions. The climbing wall will be open.

Birds: Learn about attracting birds to your back yard through gardening choices, nest boxes and water features. Master birder Neil Zimmerman will speak at 7 p.m. Friday in Everett. Get more info here.

Fishing: A fly fishing show is Saturday and Sunday at the Lynnwood Convention Center. There will be casting and fly-tying demonstrations, films and gear. The 2014 International Fly Fishing Film Festival is on Sunday. Get more information here.

Free: For Presidents Day Weekend, Feb. 15-17, fees will be waived at National Parks and on U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and BLM lands.

Scramble: Learn how to reach many of the peaks in the Cascades. Scrambling is like hiking, but with more time off trail and more clambering over rock or snow. Learn how to do it safely with an Everett Mountaineers class that begins on Feb. 20. Learn more here.

Lynx and hare: Learn about lynx and snowshoe hare at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Northwest Stream Center. Researcher Aaron Wirsing will tell what he’s learned about these interesting species. The event is $5 for members and $7 for nonmembers. Get more info here.

Himalayas: See a screening of the film K2-Siren of the Himalayas on Feb. 20 at the Mountaineers center in Seattle. The documentary tells the story of K2, a mountain where for every four people who have reached the summit, one has died trying. The film will be introduced by Jim Wickwire, the first American to summit K2. Get more info here.

Paddle: Take a paddle with the North Sound Sea Kayaking Association through the sloughs of the Snohomish River Delta on Feb 22. Cold weather and immersion gear are a must. Get more info here.

Kids snowboarding: Kids between 3 and 6 years old can try out snowboarding on Feb. 22-23 at Stevens Pass. The boards and the terrain are designed for young kids. Get more info here.

Snow geese: The Port Susan Snow Goose and Birding Festival is Feb. 22-23 in Stanwood. There will be classes, field trips, an art show and activities for kids. Get more info here.

Run: The Lord Hill Train Run is Feb. 23 at Lord Hill Regional Park in Snohomish. There are four distances: 5 miles, 10 miles, 20 miles and 50k. Get more info and register here. The race is nearly full, so sign up soon if you want to run it.

Expo: The Northwest Outdoor Adventure Expo is Feb. 28-March 2 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. There will be discussions, slide shows, music and indoor adventures such as a zip line and paddle pool. There will also be a variety of outdoor vendors. Get more info here.

Bikes: The Seattle Bicycle Expo is March 1-2. There will be more than 175 vendors, how-to presentations, panels and expert demos. Get more info here.

Go paddling: The Washington Water Trails Association will offer a guided paddle on March 1 on the Sammamish River. Attendees will meet in Woodinville and then paddle or row to Red Hook Brewery and enjoy lunch before returning. Get more info here.

Extreme: The Radical Reels Tour, featuring extreme sports, is March 6 at the Mountaineers in Seattle. Get more info and tickets here.

Birds: The Wings Over Water birding festival is March 14-16 in Blaine. There are both indoor and outdoor events. Most of the event is free, although field trips to Samiahmoo Spit or Drayton Harbor are $5. Get more info here.
