• Skyline Lake, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 17, $40 (ages 12 to 17 with part

icipating adult, $32). Hike up to a lake at Stevens Pass with panoramic views of the central Cascades crest. Only for experienced snowshoers or beginners who are in good condition. Round trip: 3 miles, with a 1,200-foot gain. Departs from Parks and Recreation office.

Everett Mountaineers: Meetings at 7 p.m. first Wednesday of the month, Snohomish County East Administration Building, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett. www.everettmountaineers.org.

Greg’s Custom Fishing Rods: 12405 20th St. NE, Lake Stevens; registration required at 425-335-1391; www.gregscustomrods.com.

• Rod-building class; 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 3, 4, 10 and 11. The four-evening class includes instruction, use of the workshop and tools, and epoxy for the rod. $35.

• Fly-casting lessons scheduled on an individual basis. Call our shop to make arrangements.

Over-the-Hill-Hikers: Various times on Thursdays, Edmonds Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave.; www.scscedmonds.org. Most trips cost $13 for senior center members and $16 for nonmembers. To sign up, call 425-513-9374. All hikes meet and park at United Methodist Church, 828 Caspers St., Edmonds. Each hike is limited to 10 hikers.

• 7:30 a.m. April 28; Carbon River Parkway Trail (Mount Rainier area), 4 to 6 easy miles.

• 8 a.m. May 12; Harry Osborne Forest (east of Sedro Wooley), 3 to 4 easy/medium miles.

Pilchuck Audubon Society: Birding trips, pack a lunch if it’s not provided; www.pilchuckaudubon.org.

• Montlake Fill (Union Bay Natural Area); 8 a.m. April 19, Lynnwood Walmart lot. One of the most productive birding areas in this vicinity. If time allows we may visit Foster Island, Magnuson Park and other areas of North Lake Washington. Trip Leaders: Art Wait, 360-563-0181, Virginia Clark, 360-435-3750.

• Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge; 7:30 a.m. April 26, Lynnwood Walmart lot. Long road trip about 80 miles each way. At the refuge we will need to walk several miles to fully experience the marshes, tide flats, grasslands and riparian woodlands. Two hundred species have been seen here. Trip Leader: Virginia Clark, 360-435-3750.

• Snoqualmie River Valley, Monroe to Carnation; meet at 7:30 a.m. May 3 at Monroe park and ride on U.S. 2, west of the fairgrounds. Leader: Virginia Clark, 360-435-3750.

• Cle Elum area; meet at 6:30 a.m. May 10 at the Monroe park and ride for an all day trip. sightings of red-naped sapsucker, northern goshawk, calliope hummingbird, Western bluebird, mountain bluebird and cassin’s finch are possible. Leader: Virginia Clark, 360-435-3750.

• Smith and Spencer islands; meet at 8 a.m. May 17 at Langus Riverfront Park in Everett. Lots of waterfowl and raptors. Leaders: Ed Cushing, 425-438-4146, and Art Wait, 360-563-0181.

• Joint Base Lewis-McChord (Tacoma); meet at 8 a.m. May 24 at the Lynnwood Walmart lot at 1400 164th St. SW (I-5 Exit 183). It will be a 11/2-hour trip, requiring registration (call trip leaders) and carpooling (four or five cars maximum). Vehicles entering the base are required to have a visitor’s pass. To get the pass at the visitor’s center, drivers must present registration, proof of insurance and a driver’s license. All passengers will be required to show a photo ID. This area regularly contains many native species, not often seen in Western Washington. Leaders: Virginia Clark 360-435-3750, Tom Eble 206-979-5884.

• Leavenworth area; Meet at 6:30 a.m. May 31 at the Monroe park and ride. Hike up Icicle Creek to Camas Meadows for possible sightings of the calliope hummingbird and lazuli bunting among other species in Camas Meadows. Leader: Virginia Clark, 360-435-3750.

Sound Steppers Volkssport Club: 425-397-7301; www.soundsteppers.org. Meets 6:15 p.m. first Thursdays, Crossroad Church, 18527 60th Ave. W., Lynnwood. See www.meetup.com/walkers-574 for details and a future walk schedule.

• Strutting in Arlington, May 14. Registration 8a.m. to noon at Haller Middle School, 600 E. 1st St., Arlington. Walk 5k, 10k, or 13k distances; entry free or $3 for stamp in walking books. Everyone is welcome.
