Beginning fly tying — 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays from January 11 to March 1, Edmonds Plaza Room, (above the library at 650 Main St.) Cost $78 for the eight lessons. Taught by members of the Olympic Fly Fisher Club. Keep all the flies you tie in class.

Fishing in Washington — 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays from January 11 to March 1, Room 302 Frances Anderson Center; Where to go and how to catch salmon, bass, trout, walleye, and other species in fresh and saltwater. Cost $65 for the eight lessons.

n 8 a.m. Jan. 27; Kelcema Lake Road — Mountain Loop Highway (snowshoe and cross-country), 4 to 8 miles, difficulty medium, elevation gain 700 to 1,100 feet.

n George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, British Columbia — Meet at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 11 at Quilceda Village Wal-Mart west of Marysville (I-5-Exit 200). The refuge is on Westham Island at the mouth of the Frazier River. Waterfowl, chickadees and nuthatches, plus surprise species. Bring your U.S. passport or enhanced driver’s license. Trip leader: Virginia Clark, 360-435-3750.

n Camano Island — Meet at 8 a.m. Jan. 18 at the Quilceda Village Wal-Mart lot west of Marysville (I-5 exit 200). Birding at Triangle Cove, Eide Road, English Boom, Iverson Spit and other sites. Trip leader: Virginia Clark 360-435-3750.

n Guemes Island — Meet at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 25 at the Quilceda Village Wal-Mart lot west of Marysville (I-5 exit 200). After a ferry ride from Anacortes, enjoy unique Guemes Island, its people, birds and dogs. Trip leader: Virginia Clark 360-435-3750.

Annual snowshoe trek — Stevens Pass to Lanham Lake; Meet 8:30 a.m. Jan. 22 at Fairhaven park-and-ride, about 10 a.m. at Sultan Bakery or 11 a.m. at the Nordic Ski Center about 5 miles east of Stevens Pass. Sign-up deadline 5 p.m. Jan. 19. Open to the public, limit of 8 participants. Bring lunch and water, snowshoes, poles and boots.
