Trail work party: Earn a Discover Pass while helping construct a new trail on Dirty Harry’s Peak near Snoqualmie Pass from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 28. No experience is necessary for the project, which will include constructing rock walls and rock steps. The hike to the project site is 2 to 4 miles roundtrip over steep and rocky terrain and is challenging. Wear boots, long pants, work gloves, long-sleeved shirt and eye protection. Winter walk: Embark on a winter walk of Camano Island State Park at 9:50 a.m. Nov. 3, 2269 Lowell Point Road, Camano Island. The 2.6-mile walk, led by Friends of Camano Island Parks members, include views of Saratoga Passage and Elger Bay, a fern grotto and ravine. Wear appropriate clothes and sturdy shoes or boots. No dogs allowed. Trail booklets and maps will be available for a suggested $1 donation. Park passes are required, though temporary passes can be provided. More at www.friendsofcamanoislandparks.org.
Free park-ing: The next day to visit Washington State Parks without an entrance fee is Nov. 11 on Veterans Day. Get mushy: Snohomish County Mycological Society’s annual wild mushroom show is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 28 at Floral Hall in Forest Park, 802 E. Mukilteo Blvd., Everett. The show features mushroom displays, kits, books and videos. Learn to distinguish more than 100 different species of wild mushrooms. Bring your own fungi samples for identification. Outdoor adventure speaker: Marysville’s Outdoor Adventure Speaker Series continues at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 with Jason Colby on “The Ocean’s Apex Predator,” at the Marysville Opera House, 1225 Third St. Marysville. A historian and professor, Colby’s talk will explore humanity’s transformed relationship with the ocean’s apex predator — the orca whale — and what it means for the future of our local environment and Puget Sound adventures. Snowshoeing: A “Snowshoeing Basics” class is at 6 p.m. Oct. 25 at Alderwood REI, 3000 184th SW, Lynnwood. The free class, led by experienced REI staff, will focus on appropriate gear selection, the basics of what you need on a snowshoeing adventure and where to go to get started. Space is limited. Navigation basics: Learn basic navigation skills using a map and compass at 6 p.m. Nov. 1 at Alderwood REI, 3000 184th SW, Lynnwood. Pinpointing a location through triangulation, navigation to new locations by following a bearing and reading a topographic map will also be covered. Maps and compasses are provided.
