Check it out. Classical meets hip-hop.
Two classically trained violin virtuosos mate their strings with some sizzling hip-hop, funk and jazz to produce a signature sound somewhere between Bach and Emcee T.
The group, Black Violin, is made up of backward-ballcap- and T-shirt-wearing violinists Wil-B and Kev Marcus and their DJ, djtk. They’ve blended their own brand of music with such stars as Alicia Keys, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Kanye West, Fifty Cent, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Aretha Franklin and the Eagles, and now they’re bringing their sound to Everett.
Black Violin performs at 6:30 p.m. April 6 at the Everett Civic Auditorium, 2415 Colby Ave., Everett. They play for free as part of the EvCC’s 2009 Artist and Lecture Series presented by EvCcC’s Student Activities Office.
Black Violin’s Wil-B started on the viola at age 14 and Kev Marcus began on the violin at age 9. After graduating from high school, the musicians received full scholarships to Florida State and Florida International University, respectively.
They eventually formed the group Black Violin and instantly obtained a fan base with their addictive sound. In 2004, the group joined Alicia Keys on stage at the Billboard Music Awards.
