What: Nerine bowdenii
This herbaceous perennial is similar in shape to amaryllis. In the summer, it produces leafless stems that are later followed by the flowers. It is valued both for its exotic form and its pink blooms when most autumn shades are in the earth tones. It is best left alone after planting, as it does not respond well to transplanting and blooms best when crowded. Nerine bowdenii is native to South Africa and was named for Athlestin Bowden in 1904 as it was he who sent the bulbs to England from its native land. The Royal Horticulture Society has conferred its Award of Garden Merit on Nerine bowdenii.
