What: Rhododendron “Original Walloper,” also known as Lem’s Monarch
Seattle hybridizer Lem Halfdan introduced this shrub years ago and it continues to mesmerize rhododendron lovers. Its giant flowers are trumpet-like and funnel-shaped, with colors that span white to blush with dark pink edges. It is a knockout in the garden given its color variation, its size and the quantity of the blooms. Looking for the “wow” factor? This is it.
SUN OR SHADE: Thrives in part shade.
Size: In 10 years, this shrub will reach 6 to 10 feet tall and have a 10- to 12-foot spread.
