WHAT: The Kentucky coffee tree, gymnocladus dioica, features huge leaves made up of small leaflets that give way to bold, attractively open and coarse branches as it moves through the seasons. Its winter twigs have a silver-white, reflective quality.
WHY PLANT IT: Its airy gracefulness, upright habit and dark green foliage provide a light and open shade, great for growing spring bulbs and perennials underneath. It would be an excellent choice for a larger garden.
WHERE: It grows best in well-drained, fertile, rich soil, but will tolerate poor soils and clay if drainage is adequate. Place in full sun and, once established, it will require only occasional water during prolonged dry periods.
HOW: There are no serious diseases or insect problems associated with this tree. Little pruning is required.
ACTUAL SIZE: This slow-growing deciduous tree will reach about 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide in 10 years. Specimens will reach 35 feet tall and 25 feet wide in 20 years.
