WHAT: All ivy is evil, right? Wrong, actually. Variegated Persian ivy, unlike most English ivy, is a noninvasive species and is one of the few vigorous evergreen vines that can tolerate dry, shady conditions. While it needs some room to grow, with pruning, it can easily be kept under control.
WHY PLANT IT: It has the largest foliage of any ivy and provides a bold, variegated mix of mint green, cream and forest green to brighten even the darkest locations. It tolerates drought and pollution and grows well in most soils, including heavy clay.
WHERE: It prefers partial to full shade in well-drained soil. Once established, it requires little water, even during prolonged periods of drought.
HOW: As a groundcover, it makes a thick dense mat and keeps weeds from getting established. It can give containers year-round interest and can also be grown on strong permanent supports. It should not, however, be allowed to grow on the exteriors of buildings or tree trunks.
CAUTION: People with sensitive skin should wear gloves when handling ivy as its sap can be an irritant.
ACTUAL SIZE: This vine can reach 50 feet or more. With annual pruning, it can be kept as small as 10 to 15 feet long.
