Plant some trees for ArborFest 2004

Help preserve the environment and learn about plants, animals and habitats from local experts and naturalists at Camp Killoqua, 20 miles northwest of Everett, as part of ArborFest 2004.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, the public is invited to join the Arbor Day celebration by planting trees on the 185 acres of forest, lakefront and wetlands area.

Killoqua outdoor education staff and community members from PAWS, Snohomish County and Adopt-A-Stream foundation will present a number activities providing information on wildflowers, plants, habitats and games.

Participants are advised to bring a picnic lunch.

The Everett Astronomical Society and Everett Public Library sponsor a free Astronomy Day event 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at Everett Public Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave., Everett.

Presentations and activities include slide shows, telescope displays and computer astronomy. Books, photographs and posters will also be displayed. Amateur astronomers will be available to answer questions.

Attendees can pick up free copies of detailed sky maps showing the night sky objects in April and May.

Weather permitting, a free public observation session will begin at dusk at Harborview Park. Until 11 p.m., a variety of telescopes, ranging from 3 to 16 inches in diameter, will be set up for the public to view the night sky.

Celebrate Earth Day at EcoFest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Stillwaters Environmental Center, 26059 Barber Cutoff Road, Kingston.

The ecology festival features more than 40 environmental booths and displays, including two hybrid cars, electric cars and a booth from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Food will be available and live entertainment provided.

Listen to music by Hank and Nick Veenstra and Carpenter Creek Chorus. At 2 p.m. there will be a performance by Haidalaas, a traditional dancing group from the Haida tribe.

The “Wild in the Watershed” parade is at 1 p.m. Spectators are invited to participate in wildlife costume.

In addition, the Kingston Farmers Market is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gordon Elementary School.
