WHAT: The Rainbow variety of leucothoe fontanesiana is evergreen until fall when its fascinating leaf coloration begins.
It is a knockout in the woodland garden where winter shrub choices can run from green to greener.
In May, small white urn-shaped flowers are formed and are wonderfully fragrant.
In the summer, its leaves are leathery and dark, lustrous green until they begin changing colors in the fall.
SUN OR SHADE: This shrub prefers cool woodland areas, but it can tolerate filtered sun.
SIZE: It grows slowly to about 6 feet high and wide.
SEE IT: You can find this shrub at the Evergreen Arboretum & Gardens, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett, www.evergreenarboretum.com.
Turn right after passing through the arboretum’s periwinkle blue columns. Go into the woodland garden and look for it on your left.
