WHAT: Cryptomeria japonica “Spiralis” is an evergreen Japanese cedar, sometimes called “Granny’s Ringlets” because of the spiral twists of the needles that seem to curl.
The lime green to golden needles are borne on contorted branches and stems that create the inward curling feature. Its coloration is a welcome addition to the garden on overcast days.
In 2012, it earned the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticulture Society.
SUN OR SHADE: Spiralis needs full sun to achieve the maximum coloration but will tolerate part shade.
SIZE: As a young tree it appears to be a shrub but develops into a tidy cone-shaped tree over time and grows to 20 feet tall by 10 feet wide.
SEE IT: At the WSU Snohomish County Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road, Marysville.
