What: Gentiana pumila subspecies delphinensis is an unusual alpine plant native to Europe with a color best described as true delphinium blue. Though it is a diminutive plant, its color makes it a focal point especially in a rock garden, container or on a rock wall. It blooms for about four weeks in the spring but remains evergreen throughout the year.
Sun or shade? It grows well in full sun in moist, well-drained soil.
Size: It reaches about 5 inches tall and supports a large number of blooms that are about 1 inch across.
See it: You can find this plant at the Evergreen Arboretum & Gardens — 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett; www.evergreenarboretum.com — in the rock garden just past the master gardener demonstration border, which is on the left the after you pass through the arboretum entrance columns.
