WHAT: Jerusalem sage adds vertical interest to the garden, but also an unusual form.
Its yellow flowers are borne in clusters around the thick stem.
Its fragrant, sagelike leaves have a velvety quality that is so prized some gardeners have been known to remove its flowers to enhance the appearance of its tall stem and foliage.
It is native to Greece, Turkey and Italy, and is a favorite of birds.
SUN OR SHADE: Place in full sun, where it will bloom in late spring and early summer.
SIZE: This perennial, also known as phlomis fruticosa, reaches 4 to 6 feet high in a single season.
