There was much gnashing of teeth this week when Steve Carell confirmed he was leaving “The Office” at the end of the coming season. How can the show go on without Michael Scott? Should it? Do we need to start some sort of Facebook campaign to get Carell to stay?
Relax, folks. It’s a huge ensemble with several excellent candidates for advancement within Dunder-Mifflin, to say nothing of many other qualified candidates (can you say “Zach Galifianakis”?). Might we suggest:
Promote from within: Jim and Dwight are too predictable, but dim-witted Andy, with his unquenchable desire to be liked, might make the easiest transition for viewers. But really it’s time Darryl gets a shot.
Bring in someone new: Hire Maria Bamford. A fantastic impressionist and character comic, Bamford might be the perfect replacement. Search YouTube for “Maria Bamford crazy office” and imagine the possibilities …
Bring in someone old: They could transfer Holly back to Scranton. But what would it take for Ricky Gervais to reprise his role as David Brent? Those of us who were fans of the U.K. version would love to see him be tha boss in the American office. At least long enough to be fired.
