Sunday evening’s varied “Season Encore Performance” was the Pacific Northwest Ballet company at its best.
The dozen short dances, many excerpts of longer programs, highlighted the careers of eight dancers who are leaving the Northwest stage: Ariana Lallone, Jeffrey Stanton, Stanko Milov, Olivier Wevers, Chainessa Eames, Stacy Lowenberg, Josh Spell and Barry Kerollis.
Some of the departing performers are going on to other ballet careers, while some including Stanton, Lallone and Milov, are transitioning to roles behind the curtain.
There are times when the dancers seem relaxed and when they express themselves while fully enjoying the performance. Sunday night was one of those moments. The celebrated class, and the entire company, seemed to devote their hearts to Sunday’s dances.
Some dances hit all the marks. “Rubies,” brilliantly danced to a capriccio for piano and orchestra by Igor Stravinsky, was thrilling. The dance was farewell to Kerollis and Spell, and featured the much feted Lallone. Jeffrey Stanton’s tap dancing in “Silver Lining,” was another evening highlight.
These encore evenings, which are an annual part of PNB’s schedule, are perfect for people who are looking for great variety on stage, and appreciate being a part of a special night for the company.
PNB’s “Next Step,” is the company’s annual choreographer’s showcase where members of the company stage their own creations. It’s scheduled for 7 p.m., June 18. Last year’s showcase was a marvel of creativity and energy.
